The 2017 Belmont Stakes is set to take place on Saturday, June 10 at Belmont Park in Elmont, New York. While there may be no Triple Crown at stake this year, the hype for one of the biggest thoroughbred races in the U.S. is still at a fever pitch.

The Belmont Stakes is the oldest of the three Triple Crown races, with the first ever running dating back to 1867. This year the race will be missing some pretty big names from the previous two stake races, but it won’t damper the atmosphere for horse racing enthusiasts. Notably missing from the 2017 Belmont Stakes field will be Kentucky Derby winner Always Dreaming and Preakness Stakes winner Cloud Computing.

To put even more of a twist on things, one of the early favorites at the Belmont, Classic Empire, had to withdraw from the race earlier this week due to a foot issue.

Even though few big name horses will be watching from the sidelines at this year’s Belmont Stakes, several Kentucky Derby and Preakness entries will be making their way to New York for the final leg of the Triple Crown circuit. The top two on most handicappers' lists to watch are Irish War Cry and Lookin at Lee.

With Rajiv Miragh at the helm, Irish War Cry is listed as the horse to beat in today’s Belmont Stakes.

If Irish War Cry can run the way he did at the Wood Memorial back in April, winning by three and a half lengths over Preakness winner Cloud Computing, he should claim the Belmont Stakes title. Listed at 7/2 odds, Irish War Cry is the early morning line favorite. Right behind Irish War Cry on the odds board is Lookin at Lee.

This horse is overdue to pull off a big win!

Lookin at Lee finished second in the Kentucky Derby and fourth in the Preakness Stakes. Is the Belmont Stakes finally the race where Lookin at Lee can pull off the win? Irad Ortiz is one of the best jockeys in the business, and he will once again be atop of Lookin at Lee Saturday afternoon.

The three-year-old is currently listed at 5/1 to pull off the win.

One other horse that is worth keeping an eye on is Gormley. Gormley raced in the Kentucky Derby but chose to skip the Preakness, which may give him a bit of advantage over many of the horses heading into the starting gate today.

Gormley is a wildcard, but one factor that may work against him is the distance of this race. The Belmont Stakes is the longest of all three stake races at 1 ½ miles and that extra quarter mile usually has an effect on many horses, especially those who have a bad reputation for closing poorly.
