The latest episode of WWE "SmackDown Live" took place on Tuesday, May 16th, 2017 from the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. With the WWE "Backlash" 2017 pay-per-view arriving on Sunday, it would be a big night for the superstars involved in the upcoming PPV matches to gain some momentum. Among the superstars in action for the latest installment of the show were "The Phenomenal" AJ Styles, No. 1 contender Jinder Mahal, and the WWE World Champion Randy Orton. Here are the latest WWE "SmackDown Live" results for the May 16th episode.
Latest match results
After Kevin Owens opened the show with his own edition of Chris Jericho's "Highlight Reel," AJ Styles came out to interrupt and let Owens know he'll be taking his title away on Sunday. Jinder Mahal came out and said that he was supposed to be Owens' guest rather than Styles. It all led to Styles chasing Owens out of the ring and then Jinder heading to the ring for the opening match.
In that first contest of the night, Jinder Mahal picked up a huge win to give himself momentum for his match against Randy Orton on Sunday. Late in the match, the Singh Brothers distracted the referee and Owens hit Styles in the knee as he was setting up for the Phenomenal Forearm. Mahal grabbed Styles to hit the Cobra Clutch Slam for the pinfall.
The team of Fandango and Tyler Breeze also gained a big win ahead of their tag team title match this Sunday. Breeze made quick work of The Colons with Fandango scoring the winning pinfall after hitting a Falcon Arrow. Post-match, The Usos came out to cut a promo about how they will defeat Breezeango on Sunday and read them their "rights."
There was an in-ring confrontation involving Charlotte, Becky and Naomi against Tamina, Natalya, Carmella and James Ellsworth.
With Shane McMahon also in the ring, once the tension was high he booked Carmella vs. Naomi in a match. During that bout, James Ellsworth found himself ejected from the ringside area. A bit later, the same thing happened as Natalya and Tamina were also ejected. Charlotte and Becky taunted the two heels, who then charged at them and started fighting ringside.
All of that distraction helped Carmella grab a surprise pinfall on the women's champion Naomi.
Dolph Ziggler cut a promo about how Shinsuke Nakamura hasn't done anything in WWE yet and he has done everything. There was also a new WWE "Backlash" match announced which will feature Sami Zayn vs. Baron Corbin.
Main event match
With No. 1 contender Jinder Mahal getting a victory earlier in the show, "The Viper" Randy Orton would try to gain one of his own in the main event. Orton battled Baron Corbin in a non-title match to close out the show. The two competitors had not really crossed paths too much before, but tonight's match gave an early preview of what a future feud could look like.
During the late part of the match, Corbin gained control and stomped away on the champion in the corner.
A bit later, "The Lone Wolf" was able to hit a Deep Six but only got a near fall on Orton. Shortly after, "The Viper" struck, as he hit the RKO out of nowhere to drop Corbin for the winning pinfall. Orton stood tall to close out the latest edition of "SmackDown Live" ahead of Sunday's WWE "Backlash" PPV.
