The Pittsburgh Penguins were able to come away with a huge win in Game 1 of the NHL Stanley Cup Finals. That gave them the series lead at 1-0 over the challenging Nashville Predators. Despite Nashville playing what was said to be a great all-around game, they failed to get the win against the reigning champions.

In Game 1 of the series, the Pittsburgh Penguins surged out to a quick 3-0 lead after the first period. However, Nashville was said to dominate for most of the contest, roaring back to tie things up at 3-3 in the third period. Colton Sissons scored on a power play assisted by Roman Josi and Calle Jarnkrok, while Frederick Gaudreau also scored.
Despite looking like they could score again and get a late win, the game saw Jake Guentzel and Nick Bonino each scored to close out the game 5-3 in favor of the Penguins. Bonino could be called the "hero" for his side, having scored twice in the win.
When looking at Game 1's box score, one could see that Nashville had a controlling advantage.
They had 26 shots on goal for the game compared to just 12 for Pittsburgh. In fact, the home team was allowed zero shots on goal in the second period and somehow managed to get four in the third. Nashville also registered more hits than their opponents with 37 compared to 31 and had eight takeaways in the game. The Penguins managed just five on their home ice.
That disappointing loss will likely provide Nashville the incentive to try to bounce back tonight and tie up the series. Vegas Insider reports that the Penguins will still be favorites at around -140 or a bit higher on the money line, while the Predators are a +125 underdog. Tonight's over/under goals total will be 5-1/2 goals for the complete game, which was eclipsed easily in Game 1.
However, one has to wonder if Game 2 could be a completely different situation, with tight defense and less scoring.
