Yesterday, the Washington Nationals crushed the New York Mets 23-5 in what turned out to be a historic day. However, it was not Nationals star Bryce Harper who had the historic outing, but third baseman Anthony Rendon. Apart from Rendon making history, another odd story in the baseball world was the Miami Marlins honoring Ichiro Suzuki with a giant mosaic.

Rendon's historic day

Anthony Rendon had an unimaginable game yesterday. In his 6 at-bats, he had 6 hits, 5 runs, 10 RBI, 1 double, 3 home runs and 16 total bases. Prior to this outing, Rendon had never had a multi-home run game in his MLB career. For the Washington Nationals, the 23 run outburst as a team was the most in a single game in franchise history, with Rendon's 10 RBI in a game being a team record.

He became only the second player in baseball history to have 6 hits, 3 home runs and 10 RBI in a game. The only other played to accomplish that was Walker Cooper for the Cincinnati Reds in 1949.

Rendon also became the first player in baseball history to go 6 for 6 hitting, drive in 10 runs, score 5 runs and finish with 16 total bases in one game. He is also the fourth player since 1900 to go 6 for 6 with at least 3 home runs, joining Ty Cobb (1925), Edgardo Alfonzo (1999) and Shawn Green (2002). Finally, he became only the 13th player in history and the first since Garret Anderson in 2007 to have at least 10 RBI in a game.

The Nationals' ridiculous April

The Washington Nationals finished the first month of the season with a 17-8 record and are currently the best team in baseball. Their offense is historic, as they became the first team since at least 1920 to finish April with the top three players in RBI.

Those three are Ryan Zimmerman (29), Bryce Harper (26) and Daniel Murphy (26).

Bryce Harper had 32 runs in April, making him the only player since 1900 to accomplish that. The whole team had 170 runs, the most in a month for the franchise since they were the Montreal Expos in August 1999. Since Tuesday (April 25), the Nationals have scored 73 runs, while the Kansas City Royals have scored 63 all season.

Suzuki's strange gift

Veteran and future Hall of Famer Ichiro Suzuki has been no stranger to having tributes honoring him over the past couple of years. This time his current team, the Miami Marlins, gave him a strange gift in a ceremony before their game with the Pittsburgh Pirates. The ceremony was originally scheduled to take place last season, but was delayed following the tragic death of pitcher Jose Fernandez.

The team gave Suzuki a giant plexiglass mosaic collage that is more than eight feet wide. It is made up of photographs that show every single one of his 3,000 hits. The ceremony also included an offering of congratulations from Japanese home run king Sadaharu Oh over the scoreboard video. Ichiro bowed toward the scoreboard in response to this and was clearly touched by the whole event.
