Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic both advance on Day 2 of 2017 French Open

Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic were both active in the men's singles draw at the 2017 French Open on Monday, Day 2 of action from Roland Garros. Nadal faced a French national in Benoit Paire while Djokovic faced a Spaniard in Marcel Granollers, a player that has enjoyed some modest success at Roland Garros over the years. Neither match was competitive with each of the favorites advancing in straight sets.

Djokovic defeated Granollers 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 while Nadal defeated Paire 6-1, 6-4, 6-1. Both results were great for the high seeds as neither player should be bothered by the length of the matches as they prepare for deep runs in Paris.

Djokovic will face Sousa next

Next up for Djokovic, who is now 48-2 in the first round of majors, is Joao Sousa. Sousa isn't a bad clay courter, however he has never really been adept at best-of-five set tennis. He's now 28 years old and he has yet to make the fourth round of any major. At Roland Garros in particular, he has yet to win a second-round match. But tennis fans will remember the shocking loss that Djokovic suffered in the second round of the Australian Open earlier this season.

When he takes to his second-round match he will be looking to avoid a similar upset.

Nadal will face Robin Haase

Next up for Nadal is Dutch player Robin Haase. Haase enjoyed an easy first-round win to get into the French Open's 2nd round. However, the Dutch player's track record in 2nd round matches in Grand Slam tournaments is definitely lacking. A veteran on tour, Haase debuted in Grand Slam tennis back at the 2007 US Open. Since that time he has only actually won two second-round matches and he won't seriously be looking to take out Nadal. It seems that the Spaniard has a pretty clear path to the third round as Haase simply doesn't appear to be much of a hurdle to clear.

While Djokovic and Nadal both avoided upsets, one of the other strong clay courters in the tournament fell in the opening round.

Jack Sock, seeded 14th in Roland Garros this season, lost his opening match to Jiri Vesely. The Czech player eliminated the American fairly routinely 7-5, 7-5, 6-3. Sock and his American fans will certainly be disappointed with the result as something was expected of him in this tournament, one that he has done well in at points in the past. In a milder upset Nicolas Basilashvili eliminated French veteran Gilles Simon in three sets. Simon was a seeded player as well and certainly his home-country fans will disappointed with his exit.
