The Cleveland Browns entered the 2017 NFL Draft with two first round draft picks and most experts thought they would take Myles Garrett with the first pick and a quarterback with the 12th pick. That didn't happen and the Browns scrambled to make a Trade with the New England Patriots during the NFL Draft, offering their 12th pick and some second round picks for Jimmy Garoppolo and the Patriots declined the trade once again.

Cleveland Browns first round quarterback problems

The Cleveland Browns need a quarterback bad and have for almost a decade now. They have made it clear that they would love to get Jimmy Garoppolo from the New England Patriots but that has not happened yet. When it came to the 2017 NFL Draft, there were three quarterbacks that would have been worth a top 12 pick for the Browns - Mitchell Trubisky, Patrick Mahomes, and Deshaun Watson.

After the Browns drafted Myles Garrett with the first overall pick in the NFL Draft, giving them a legitimate pass rushing defensive end, the Chicago Bears made a controversial move, trading up one spot to take quarterback Mithcell Trubisky from North Carolina.

Moving to the 10th pick, the Kansas City Chiefs traded up with the Buffalo Bills and chose quarterback Patrick Mahomes from Texas Tech to work under Alex Smith.

With that finished, the Cleveland Browns realized that they only had Deshaun Watson remaining and decided he was not worth their 12th overall pick. They tried to call the Patriots to trade for Jimmy Garoppolo but the Patriots were not interested. Knowing they couldn't get Garoppolo and not seeing the value in using their 12th pick on Watson, the Browns traded their 12th pick to the Houston Texans.

Cleveland Browns draft picks so far

The first overall pick for the Cleveland Browns was Myles Garrett. Most experts saw Garrett as the best overall player in the draft although some, such as NFL legend Warren Sapp, disagreed.

The Browns then gave up the 12th pick in the 2017 NFL Draft for the 25th pick. The Texans, by the way, drafted Deshaun Watson to be their new quarterback.

With the 25th pick, the Browns then chose safety Jabrill Peppers from Michigan, widely considered one of the top cornerbacks in the NFL Draft this year. Cleveland still wasn't finished and traded for another first round pick from the Green Bay Packers and used that for a fast, raw, talented tight end named David Njoku from Miami. The Browns got some good players but still have no quality starting quarterback.
