It is well known across the NBA that the Cleveland Cavaliers desperately need a veteran backup point guard for their title defense. Lebron James even recently stated that the team needed a point guard and he wasn't going to say it again. That is definitely saying a lot when your franchise player makes a statement like that. With the trade deadline approaching in February, now may be the time for Cleveland to make some moves in order to have their roster ready for the playoff push. They have filled a hole at the shooting guard spot with the acquisition of Kyle Korver from the Atlanta Hawks but the need to get some depth at point guard is apparent.
The team needs to do everything in its power to ensure that Kyrie Irving is fresh for the playoffs and not logging too many minutes during the regular season.
Cavs to add point guard to roster?
Mario Chalmers, Norris Cole, and Rajon Rondo have all been linked to the Cleveland Cavaliers in recent weeks as possible backups to all-star Kyrie Irving. The Cavs want to find a savvy veteran to fill that particular hole in their rotation so they can be more than prepared for the playoff push. Deron Williams is the latest name to popup that could possibly take over the backup duties.
Williams has had a solid year for the Dallas Mavericks so far even though the team has not lived up to expectations. Dallas is at the bottom of the Western Conference and this looks to be a lost year for them.
Trading a player like Deron could open up some room to add quality and much needed talent to the roster.
Major multi-team deal in the works?
In order for the Cleveland Cavaliers to make a trade for a veteran point guard they are probably going to need more than one partner in the deal in order to make it work financially. The NBA trade deadline is approaching swiftly and there are still quite a few teams that want to make some significant roster changes to improve their team's chances of winning this year.
Then there are others that are looking toward the future and trying to rebuild.
There is a proposed multi-team trade between the Miami Heat, Boston Celtics, Dallas Mavericks and Cleveland Cavaliers. This blockbuster mega deal would have many valuable moving parts. The Heat would get Kelly Olynk, Jae Crowder, and Iman Shumpert, and the Mavericks would get Goran Dragic.
The Cavs would receive their backup point guard by acquiring Deron Williams, and the Celtics would get Richard Jefferson and Andrew Bogut. All teams involved would be addressing a serious need, and it seems as if everyone would benefit if this potential deal were to go through.
