The People's Choice Awards have been going through a number of changes. The awards began back in the 1970s. At the time of their creation, it was something of a groundbreaking idea. Where other awards were decided by private groups, these, in theory, would be decided by the general public. For much of its run, the winners were decided by Gallup polls, sometimes resulting in accuracy issues. More recently, voting via the Internet has been the chosen method. Each time, the ceremony had been held during the first three months of the year. For over 30 years, they were televised on CBS.

This year, the ceremony is to take place in November. For the first time, E! is slated to broadcast the event. The nominees were recently announced. Despite all the changes and twists, some familiar names like Marvel are on the ballot.

Movies and television

As Comic Book notes, projects from Marvel are heavily featured in the nominations. Most prominently, "Avengers: Infinity War" and "Black Panther" are up for being the year's top movie. They, along with "Ant-Man and the Wasp" and "Deadpool 2," are up for numerous categories. On the television side, Marvel's "Luke Cage," "Jessica Jones," and "Cloak and Dagger" have been recognized.

There are also other movies listed often among the nominees. They include "A Wrinkle in Time," "Mission: Impossible - Fallout," and "Ocean's 8".

For scripted television, many long-running series have been nominated. Among them, "The Walking Dead," "Grey's Anatomy," and "Modern Family". In reality television, "America's Got Talent" and "American Idol" are among the front-runners.

Ellen Degeneres currently holds the record for having won the most People's Choice Awards.

Between her daytime talk show and her primetime game show, she is up for multiple awards again this year.

Other categories

In the music categories, Canadian stars Drake and The Weeknd are among the prominent men listed. On the women's side, Ariana Grande and Camila Cabello are up for several awards. E! reports that Selena Gomez also has multiple nominations.

Musical groups such as Little Big Town and Maroon 5 have also received nominations.

The categories for 'pop culture' include ones for style and social activism. They and their nominees may be among the most controversial, due to their polarizing nature. A perhaps less turbulent addition is a new category for the year's top animal stars.
