Streaming giant Netflix has earned several BAFTA Television Award nominations. “The Crown” secured several nominations including Leading Actress, Best Drama, and Best Supporting Actress. Netflix hit “Black Mirror” also earned several nominations including Leading Actor, Single Drama, and Supporting Actor.
The nominations were announced at BAFTA’s headquarters. BAFTA chair Jane Lush told Variety that the nominations are a sign of the changing landscape of television. Traditional cable channels are being recognized as well as the newer streaming platforms like Netflix.
BAFTA has seen that people are beginning to watch television differently. Along with Netflix, both online services All4 and BBC Three are being nominated.
Netflix and 'The Crown' hoping to bring home awards
“The Crown” is once again vying for multiple awards. This time they are facing off against “Peaky Blinders,” “Line of Duty,” and “The End of the F***ing World” for best drama. Last year it earned several nominations but lost. The series is returning for a third and fourth season. “The Crown” star Claire Foy -- who was scrutinized after it was revealed that she earned less than her co-star Matt Smith -- is up against Molly Windsor, Sinead Keenan and Thandie Newton for Leading Actress.
The Leading Actor nominees are Jack Rowan from “Born to Kill,” Joe Cole from “Black Mirror,” Sean Bean from “Broken,” and Tim Pigott-Smith from “King Charles III.” Major US hits are nominated in the international category including “Big Little Lies,” “Feud: Bette and Joan,” “The Handmaid’s Tale,” and “The Vietnam War.”
Netflix and 'The Crown' failed to win last year
“The Crown,” lost out to "Happy Valley" last year and once again faces tough competition in the best drama category.
Along with Netflix, HBO earned several nominations, as well as Amazon. Netflix has yet to win a BAFTA for television in the major categories. However, “The Crown” earned awards for best visual and graphic effects, best makeup, and best costume design last year. In 2016, Netflix did earn a win in the film category for the documentary "13th." It’s possible that this year is the year Netflix takes home awards for best actor, actress, and television show.
What was once aimed at the BBC and other traditional British programming has now transformed thanks to the likes of Netflix. That change in landscape is largely due to the success of shows like "The Crown" and "Black Mirror."
