After more than three decades, two of America’s pioneers in the entertainment industry are set to reunite in a “Mamma Mia!” sequel. Veteran songstress Cher and multi-award-winning actress Meryl Streep will join forces in “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again!” for the first time since working together in 1983 for the movie “Silkwood.” Both actresses received Oscar nominations for their performances, with Streep getting the Best Actress nod and Cher being a Best Supporting Actress nominee.

Cher to star in 'Mama Mia! Here We Go Again!'

According to Variety, Cher has already been confirmed as part of the cast in the sequel to the blockbuster hit which also features the likes of Amanda Seyfried, Colin Firth, Pierce Brosnan, Stellan Skarsgard, Dominic Cooper, Christine Baranski, Jessica Keenan Wynn, Alexa Davies, Jeremy Irvine, Josh Dylan, and Hugh Skinner.

This will be the first time Cher will be reprising a major movie role since she starred in the 2010 musical “Burlesque.” She was also included in the 2011 movie “Zookeeper,” where she voiced the character of Janet the Lioness. “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again!” will only be the fourth movie for the 71-year-old since 2000. Cher’s role in the movie is still yet to be determined but producers claimed that she is to be the film’s “secret weapon.”

'Mary Poppins Returns' to be released next year

Streep, meanwhile, has been in the role for the past few years. She has a movie set to be released this year in “The Post,” a Steven Spielberg-directed historical drama and “Mary Poppins Returns,” which is set to be released on Christmas Day next year.

Cher has won Best Actress at the Academy Awards for her portrayal in the 1987 movie “Moonstruck” while the 68-year-old Streep, who is considered the "best actress of her generation," has received 20 nominations from the Academy and won one Best Supporting Actress and two Best Actress plums.

Per Hollywood Reporter, “Mamma Mia!

Here We Go Again!” will be spearheaded by Ol Parker, writer of “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel,” as the writer and director of the movie which is set to be released on July 20, 2018, a fitting 10th-anniversary celebration for the first adaptation of the movie released in 2008.

Mamma Mia,” an adaptation of the musical based on the music of ABBA, had been an unprecedented success on the silver screen, as it garnered more than $600 million at the box office despite only having a $52 million budget.

Principal photography for “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again!” began last September in the United Kingdom and Croatia.
