Various media reports are quoting anonymous sources that Warner Bros. Studios is making an attempt to put “Titanic star Leonardo DiCaprio in the title role of the Joker standalone film it is currently developing. Although the initial assessment by the studio puts the success of the plan as a long shot, Warner Bros. may have one possible ace up in its sleeve.

Warner Bros. is also considering Academy Award winning director Martin Scorsese to be a part of the project as an executive producer, according to Variety. By doing so, the studio hopes Scorsese, who worked with DiCaprio on several films, can convince “The Revenant” actor to join the project and play the iconic Batman nemesis.

DiCaprio is not known for playing a villain in his films except in Quentin Tarantino’s 2012 film, “Django Unchained.”

Not confirmed yet

It should be noted though that Martin Scorsese’s participation on the Joker movie is still unconfirmed and no offer has been made to Leonardo DiCaprio to join the film as of the moment.

It is also pointed out that Leonardo DiCaprio has not appeared in any movie since “The Revenant,” where he won the OSCAR for Best Actor. But reports said he is currently working with Scorsese on two film projects, “Devil in the White City” and “Killers of the Flower Moon.”

DiCaprio’s participation in the said films will make the odds of him joining the Joker movie even more unlikely.

Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio worked previously on award winning films such as “The Aviator,” “The Wolf of Wall Street,” “Shutter Island,” “Gangs of New York,” and “the Departed,” which won Best Picture and Best Director for Scorsese in 2006.

The Joker movie cast and director

Apart from the rumored plan to get Leonardo DiCaprio play the role of the Joker, there is no report yet as to who is being considered for the film.

Jared Leto, who played the Joker in “Suicide Squad” is not going to play the role in this movie according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Todd Phillips has been chosen by Warner Bros. to co-write and direct this standalone film on the Joker. Phillips previous directorial works include the three “The Hangover” films and "War Dogs" starring Jonah Hill.

It was also confirmed to THR that Scott Silver, whose writing credits include 8 Mile and The Fighter will be Phillip’s co-writer.

The Joker movie is planned to be included in a still-developing label for Warners’ DC Entertainment properties but is separate from the group of films and projects that comprise the DC Extended Universe. This is partly the reason why Jared Leto will not be playing the title character.
