Matt Reeves, the director who has now taken the helm of the upcoming “The Batman” movie after Ben Affleck’s voluntary exit, has now shared some insight into his vision for the film. The upcoming movie, which is a standalone movie that will show the character’s evolution after “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” and “Justice League,” will still have Affleck as its main star, but its script has been rewritten by Chris Terrio.
A darker and more emotional take
In an interview with Yahoo! Movies, Reeves talked about his plans for the upcoming standalone movie and how he wants to focus on the detective side of the character, which is actually what he is at his core.
Additionally, Reeves mentioned that they are planning to have a “very emotional” story for the caped crusader as opposed to focusing on other shallow aesthetic elements.
Parallels with his other project
Reeves, whose latest project is the upcoming sequel “War of the Planet of the Apes,” made some comparisons to Batman and the Caesar. The director explained that both characters are essentially damaged on the inside, but despite everything that they had been through they still choose to do what’s right. There is, of course, an internal struggle for both to continue on the right path despite the imperfections of the world and their first-hand experience of man’s corruption and capacity for evil.

Inspiration for the theme
As for the overall feel of the upcoming movie, Reeves mentioned that he wants the film to be “Noir-driven” with a sense of mystery and the essence of classic detective movies. The director then praised the work of Christopher Nolan on “The Dark Knight,” which could be indicative of his intentions of following some of the movie’s cinematography styles.
The director praised Nolan for how he was able to take the franchise in a direction that was both serious and emotional.
In the same interview, Reeves mentions that while most big studios focus on a “narrow band of films,” he believes that “The Batman” offers more potential. He explains that there is a lot to explore “under the cover of the fantasy.”
The upcoming “The Batman” movie has been revealed to include Joe Manganiello as Deathstroke, J.K. Simmons as Commissioner Gordon, and Jeremy Irons as Alfred. The movie is scheduled to be released on Oct. 5, 2018. The plot for the movie is currently still unknown.
