Legendary Entertainment's brand new MonsterVerse franchise will soon have its third installment with the upcoming release of "Godzilla: King of Monsters." The upcoming Monster film, which is already in production, has now been confirmed to feature at least three of the most iconic god-like monsters taken straight from the 1970's Japanese originals.

Monster Mayhem

According to the recently released synopsis for the upcoming film, Godzilla and the crypto-zoological agency Monarch will be fighting against Mothra, Rodan, and the three-headed King Ghidorah.

However, Godzilla may be doing most of the heavy work with Monarch probably playing the part of the observer. With the rise of the ancient super species, who were thought to be mere myths, humanity's existence is apparently now in peril as it is helplessly left to watch the titans battle each other in spectacular fashion.

Possible storyline

It has not yet been made clear if the upcoming movie will be following the story line of the original Japanese classics. If the movie does go the classical route, then Mothra and Rodan may eventually side with Godzilla to take down a more dangerous enemy, namely, the ultimate Kaiju that is capable of killing Godzilla, the three-headed atomic lightning-spewing creature known as Ghidorah.

In the classic movies, Ghidorah is eventually defeated when two of its heads are cut off. However, it does manage to return with two new robotic heads, with the creature being referred to as Mecha King Ghidorah. How the transformation will exactly fit into a plausible plot is anyone's guess at this point.

Just the beginning

As previously mentioned, "Godzilla: King of Monsters" will be the third film in the new MonsterVerse franchise.

It was preceded by "Kong: Skull Island," which was released just recently, and 2014's "Godzilla" before that. The fourth film in the franchise tentatively called "Godzilla vs. Kong" will see the clash of the two monsters in the first two films.

"Godzilla: King of Monsters" will see the return of some of the original 2014 movie's stars along with some new cast members.

The confirmed cast includes Vera Farmiga, Zhang Ziyi, Ken Watanabe, Aisha Hinds, Sally Hawkins, Kyle Chandler, O'Shea Jackson Jr., Millie Bobby Brown, Charles Dance, Bradley Whitford, and Thomas Middleditch. The movie is scheduled to hit theaters on March 22, 2019. It will then be followed by "Godzilla vs. Kong," which is slated to premiere on May 22, 2020.
