After the smashing success of "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” Lucasfilm has planned more "Star Wars" spin-offs, and the shooting may begin next year.
In a recent interview with Comic Book, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy said that she is excited to work on more films. Soon the development will begin, and shooting is likely to take place in New Zealand and South Africa. She clarified that the shooting of upcoming film “Han Solo” will be completed in four to five weeks. After the post-production and marketing of this project, Lucasfilm will start developing "Star Wars" spin-offs.
In the next few months, Kennedy will call the team for an official meeting. The studio developed various blockbusters, including “American Graffiti,” “The Empire Strikes Back,” “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” “Twice Upon a Time,” “Latino,” “Howard the Duck,” “Tucker: The Man and His Dream,” “Red Tails,” and “Rogue One.”
The film series
“Star Wars” is a popular film franchise created by George Lucas. The first movie in the franchise, “Episode IV: A New Hope,” was theoretically released in 1981. Later on, blockbusters “The Empire Strikes Back” and “Return of the Jedi” hit the theaters. The three mega-budget movies constitute the “Star Wars” trilogy. In 2015, a sequel trilogy, “The Force Awakens,” was released and grossed over $700 million at the box office.
The most prominent spin-offs are 2008 blockbuster “The Clone Wars” and 2016 film “Rogue One.”
A few years ago, Walt Disney bought Lucasfilm for $4 billion and acquired the distribution rights to all “Star Wars” films, beginning with the worldwide distribution of “The Force Awakens” in 2015. In January 2013, Disney CEO Bob Iger confirmed the development of several standalone films, scripted by Simon Kinberg and Lawrence Kasdan.
