On March 24, rock singer-songwriter David Cook returned to the American Idol stage. Cook was the winner of the seventh season of the reality singing competition. He sang his new single "Heartbeat," which is off his latest studio album, "Digital Vein."

David Cook: A respected career in music

Throughout his career in the music industry, Cook has charted on the Billboard charts with such singles as "Come Back To Me," "Light On," the melancholic "Permanent," "The Last Goodbye," "Fade Into Me," as well as Idol coronation song, "The Time of my Life."

In addition, his self-titled studio album reached the Top 3 on the Billboard 200 charts, and the follow-up CD "This Loud Morning,"reached the Top 10.Following his win on the show, Cook was nominated for two Teen Choice Awards, and was subsequently named"Choice TV: Male Reality/Variety Star."

David Cook releases new album 'Digital Vein'

Digital Vein is Cook's fourth career studio album, which came out on September 18, 2015, via his own independent record label, Analog Heart Music.

Ten out of the 12 songs on that project were co-written by Cook. "Heartbeat" is its opening track, which Cook co-penned with such songwriters asAndy WaldeckandChris Reardon. The album peaked at No. 35 on the Billboard 200 all-genre charts, and it reached the Top 10 on the Billboard Independent Albums charts.

David Cook served as a mentor for 'Idol' this season

This is the final season of American Idol, and Cook was afforded the opportunity to return and mentor several contestants, includingC.J. Johnson and Olivia Rox. Johnson collaborated with Cook on a duet of Collective Soul's signature song "The World I Know," while Rox sang a duet with Cook on his own hit single "Light On."

A Houston, Texas, native, Cook will be returning in two weeks for the season finale episode of Idol, along with many other alums and winners from the history of theshow, including Grammy winners Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood, who wonthe first and fourth seasons of the competition, respectively.
