President Trump is once again treating his Secretary of State, Rex Tillerson like a low-level manager or concierge at one of Trump’s hotels. Only half a day before leaving on an 11 day Asia trip, with Tillerson, Donald Trump embarrassed his chief diplomat by saying he didn’t know if Tillerson would last through Trump’s first term.
President Trump once again slights Tillerson
In an interview with Fox host Laura Ingraham Thursday night, Donald Trump was treating the most sensitive international issues as though he were in a schoolyard water balloon fight.
It seemed as if he wanted to put all members of the State Department on warning, when he said, regarding foreign policy, “I’m the only one that matters.” He went on with Ingraham to say, “I’m the one that matters because when it comes to it, that’s what the policy is going to be.” One can only imagine what wheels are spinning in Rex Tillerson’s head at this point.
Tillerson, once an Eagle Scout, according to the New Yorker article by Dexter Filkins, from Oct. 16, 2017, has since learned the ways of the world. As the CEO of Exxon Oil in his last post before accepting Trump’s offer to head-up the state department, he was part businessman, part international diplomat, while expanding Exxon’s world position.
According to Filkins, Tillerson didn’t even want the job. “My wife told me to do this." Four months from retiring and a few hundred million dollars in the bank, he did what he was told.
Tillerson may have had enough of Trump
And then it started. Tillerson was publicly undermined when President Trump blurted out that Rex was wasting his time with diplomacy, regarding Kim Jong Un and North Korea.
Trump went on to imply that Korea only understood one thing, referring to U.S. military capabilities.
Following that episode, Tillerson, former national head of the Boy Scouts of America, was totally humiliated as Trump gave one of his off the tracks, wrong agenda for the wrong audience, speeches at the annual Boy Scout Jamboree.
Apparently, the secretary of state almost quit right then.
It was reported later that month, following a meeting of national-security officials attended by Defense Secretary Matis, that Tillerson referred to the President as a F*** moron. This was later denied by a spokeswoman for Tillerson. Another slight by President Trump was giving a good chunk of the state department’s international portfolio to son-in-law Jared Kushner.
Does Donald Trump have a backup plan?
President Trump apparently feels that Rex Tillerson is a good guy and that he is working hard. But according to his interview on Fox, he feels that his Secretary of State is weak. One can only imagine what a plane ride, not to mention 11 days on the road together, will produce. I thought the Beatles’ break up was hard. This could be can’t miss TV.
