The August recess has not served as much of a break for Congress who took the month off to no doubt recover from the fumes of the now eight-month dumpster fire that is President Trump. Even during that break, there have been shake-ups everywhere and more controversy, so far, many are saying that these have been the worst weeks yet. And with some Republicans speaking out about the President, Trump has taken the time to attack Republicans who oppose him Twitter.
One would think that these lawmakers would be allowed to offer some criticism that would help make Donald Trump a better president. But he refuses to accept it and continues to go on the attack.
Trump doesn't understand the legislative process
In a report by Politico titled: "Fallout grows as Trump continues attacks on fellow GOP members", one adviser has said that President Trump doesn't understand why things take so long to do in Congress. The unnamed adviser has said that several lawmakers who have talked to Trump have walked away with the view that the President has a very little understanding of the legislative process, which has been stated over the past several months already.
But it's only now becoming clear to those lawmakers who might have doubted that before. It's even more likely that he doesn't want to understand.
According to White House advisers, the President said that he was promised by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, House Speaker Paul Ryan and his former Chief of Staff, Reince Priebus, that they would have bills for him to sign but, that this hasn't happened. They said that he's also frustrated with the media apparently "blowing out of proportion" the failures of his agenda on Capitol Hill. One of these being that they repeal and replace Obamacare, otherwise known as the Affordable Care Act (ACA), one of the biggest legislative blunders so far.
Everyone is frustrated
White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders also attacked Congress on the President's behalf to say that it's the job of Congress to do its job. The Politico article refers to a statement by former campaign aide Sam Nunberg who said that the President was an "Independent" and therefore feels no loyalty to the Republican Party. Rep. Tom Reed (R-NY) said that he too has expressed some frustration how the President deals with Congress but he says that he simply shrugs it off.
Republicans in the House have openly expressed their effort to push Trump's agenda and have also expressed frustration with the Senate. At one time, even Paul Ryan has said that they were looking forward to seeing the Senate do their job.
The mentioned Politico article points to when the President has veered off topic of an important discussion about legislation with when he's sat down to talk with lawmakers, showing that he cares very little for any of it. This was especially the case when Republicans were trying to repeal the ACA. This, many already feel, can be attributed to the inexperience and unwillingness from the President to adjust to Washington's politics.
