A movie critic called it "The Citizen Kane of bad movies." It's terribly incoherent, full of plot holes, most of the dialogue is overdubbed and it features some of the worst acting and directing ever. But, it is one of the best and most hilarious films ever made. "The Room" is a phenomenon -- a film, a disaster, a catastrophe and a display of accidental ingenuity.
The story behind 'The Room'
After studying acting and failing to make a name for himself in Hollywood, the enigmatic self-made millionaire (by the way, no one really knows how exactly the man managed to make so much money) named Tommy Wiseau decided to make a feature film. Hollywood may not have wanted him, but he didn't care. He is the director, producer, executive producer, screenwriter, financier, and, of course, the leading actor in "The Room."
As summarized on IMDb, this is the premise of the film: "Johnny is a successful banker who lives happily in a San Francisco townhouse with his fiancée, Lisa.
One day, inexplicably, she gets bored with him and decides to seduce his best friend, Mark. From there, nothing will be the same again."
It is impossible to list everything that's wrong with "The Room," one would have to write a book (actually, Greg Sestero, who plays Johnny's best friend Mark, did just that), so here's a video by CinemaSins that shows everything wrong with "The Room" in less than 10 minutes:
Fandom
"The Room" was initially a commercial failure, but it has since developed a loyal fan base and become a cult favorite. There are countless discussion forums and fan sites dedicated to it, and lines from the movie are quoted all over the web, thousands of memes featuring Tommy Wiseau, and some of the most memorable dialogue in the film are everywhere.
For example, the film is a favorite inside joke on reddit and has its own separate discussion forum on the website.
Today, it has regular showings in theaters worldwide and thousands upon thousands of people keep re-watching the film and re-experiencing everything that "The Room" is. Some of them include Paul Rudd, Seth Rogen, Patton Oswalt, and james franco, to name a few.
In fact, James Franco loves it so much that he has decided to make a film about how "The Room" was made. Based on Greg Sestero's book, Franco's "The Disaster Artist" will inevitably catapult Tommy Wiseau and "The Room" into Hollywood stardom, ensuring a place in history books for this eccentric and unconventional genius.
Watch "The Room." It will change you, forever.
