On Sunday, President Donald Trump wrote on his Twitter page that Secretary of State Rex Tillerson had taken too many efforts to negotiate with the DPRK leader Kim Jong Un, CNN reported.
President's attitude to US-DPRK relations
On September 30, Rex Tillerson told the Chinese reporters that the US had open direct channels of communication with the DPRK, noting that the US was intended to solve the tension peacefully.
The following day, Donald Trump wrote that "I told Rex Tillerson, our wonderful Secretary of State, that he is wasting his time trying to negotiate with Little Rocket Man..." On Saturday evening, President Trump noted that being nice with the DPRK had never given good results.
Earlier, Tillerson and James Mattis, Defense Secretary, claimed that the US is aimed to achieve a diplomatic solution, but several Democrats stressed that President Trump had another point of view.
Two months ago, Trump announced that the US would destroy the DPRK if necessary. He stressed that the US was ready for the self-defense, as well as the defense of its allies.
The US authorities stand for a diplomatic solution
Tillerson’s chief public affairs adviser, R C Hammond, noted that President's tweets were not posted as a reproach to Secretary of State. Trump's intention, according to Hammond, was to show North Korea that the time of waiting for a diplomatic solution would finish soon. Hammond explained that “Channels have been open for months.
They’ve been unused and cooling for months.”
In his recent speeches and tweets, Trump abolished the DPRK leader and worsened the situation. Kim continued North Korean weapons' development, and the UN Security Council desided to impose additional sanctions on the republic.
China, the most significant ally of the DPRK, supported this decision, refusing to continue any business with North Korea.
According to one member of the Trump administration, the communication channels could stable regular negotiations between the two governments. He noted that the diplomatic channels could provide the return of detained Americans.
Bonnie Glaser, a senior adviser for Asia, said that "There is really no solution other than diplomacy,” the Guardian reported. A Democratic member of Congress Ted Lieu stressed that Trump's response to Tillerson's words about diplomatic channels "not only embarrasses Rex Tillerson, it confuses Americans & world leaders”.
