A stand-alone “Star Wars” movie that will star Obi-Wan Kenobi is reportedly in the works, along with a “Star Wars” spin-off film about Yoda, an exclusive report on The Hollywood Reporter said. According to the article, Stephen Daldry is currently in talks to oversee the rumored movie.
The Hollywood Reporter recently stated that Daldry will direct the rumored "Obi-Wan Kenobi" stand-alone movie. There are no scripts or cast members yet for the alleged project, but the director will reportedly be in charge of the development and scripting.
The project, if the director does confirm his participation, will tell the story of the Jedi master who has been reprised by actors Ewan McGregor and Alec Guinness, the report added.
Furthermore, the discussions with the director are still in the early phases. Lucasfilm is also reportedly considering the development of spin-off “Star Wars” movies that will focus on Yoda and Boba Fett, The Hollywood Reporter added.
Importance of story
If it does push through, the upcoming movie will be part of the other Lucasfilm and Disney projects that surround the iconic story series. IGN said that a separate film about Han Solo is currently on the final stages of production, and will reportedly be released next year.
Kenobi is a desert-dweller warrior and hermit who was later revealed to be a powerful fighter. In the story, he provided mentorship to the little Luke Skywalker before transforming into Darth Vader, the article stated.
One of the actors who reprised the role, Alec Guinness, earned an Oscar nod.
The character is among the main roles in the story, and is significantly part of the origins of Darth Vader. In one of the films in the series, he was betrayed by Vader along with the other Jedis. Though there are no reported actors yet to possibly fill in for the role, actor Ewan McGregor told The Hollywood Reporter that he is open for the rumored movie.
He previously portrayed the Jedi in the other parts of the series.
Possible director
Daldry, whose name came out as speculations about the movie were released, has done projects for theater. His work “’Billy Elliot” also earned him his first nomination for the Oscars, according to the entertainment website.
He reportedly seconded this work with dramas such as “The Hours and The Reader” and Netflix’s “The Crown.” This Netflix project has earned him another nomination, and this time it came from Emmys.
