Students4Justice, a student activist group at the University Of Michigan, is demanding their own segregated space so that students of color can organize social justice efforts without white interference. The demand for a non-whites-only space is just one of the many issued by the group, which, in recent weeks, has organized campus protests in an attempt to force the university to capitulate to their self-segregation whims.
The university's president, however, has no plan to comply with the group's ultimatum.
"Our president has blatantly ignored us and it is time for us to speak up," reads a post on the Students4Justice Facebook page. "We have been told that our demands are 'rude.'"
Group also wants university to hire staff for the segregated space
Even though the University of Michigan is currently in the process of building a $10 million multicultural student center, the group wants a space "solely dedicated to community organizing and social justice work specifically for people of color."
But the demands don't stop there; according to the group's petition, Students4Justice is also demanding that the university provide staff for the segregated non-white space and documents all cases of "past, current, and future student activism." They also want all symbols of "white supremacy" removed from the campus, stating that the Clarence C.
Little Science Building is named after a former university president who supported eugenics.
Now you're just being silly
The activist group's demands follow a disturbing pattern of ultimatums that students across the country are giving to their professors and administrators -- some of which border on the ridiculous. Earlier this month, student activist groups at UC San Diego vowed "resistance" if the school follows through with its plan to have the Dalai Lama -- who won the Nobel Peace prize in 1989 -- speak at the university's graduation ceremony. According to student activists, the peace-loving spiritual leader to millions of the world's Buddhists is an "oppressive figure."
