Having sensitive skin comes with its own list of headaches. But you are not alone -- there are people all over the world who deal with it. Sensitive skin can become easily irritated and can end up feeling itchy and raw, appear red and dried out. Therefore, it is of the utmost importance to select the right products for your skin type and avoid the wrong ones.

Sensitive skin needs to be treated gently and must be provided with extra protection. It might burn easily, or simply have a bad reaction to harsh, chemical products. Thankfully, there is no need to struggle.

Your strategy basically consists of using products and techniques that are gentle enough to avoid causing irritation. It's that simple!

So let’s get into it, and talk about what you can do to take care of your sensitive skin.

Cleansing your skin

Anneke la Grange in her book, "How to Apply Makeup Professionally" explains that the first step in choosing products for sensitive skin is to look for products that are labeled ‘fragrance-free’ or ‘perfume free’, since fragrances are likely to cause your fragile skin to over-react. It would be in your best interest to look for hypoallergenic products. Instead of using face washes and soaps, opt for mild cleansers.

As part of your daily skincare regimen, wash your face gently using a circular motion and make sure that the product is washed off completely.

To dry, pat the towel on your face to blot and wick away the excess water instead of using rough and abrasive motions.

Toning your skin

When choosing a toner for sensitive skin, avoid products with alcohol. I personally recommend using soothing and calming ingredients such as rose water, witch hazel, and aloe vera. Organic skin care might be the best solution for you.

Moisturizing your skin

To prevent your skin from becoming too dry, you can moisturize with a water-based moisturizer. Since sensitive skin burns very easily when exposed to the sun’s rays, it’s important to apply a sunscreen every time you go out. Remember, it has to be "fragrance-free" so it does not irritate your skin. Also, make use of hats and protective clothing to give you added protection.

Another hot tip – to prevent irritation, be careful and particular about the cleanliness of your hands when touching your face, makeup brushes, sponges, towels and pillowcases.

Being sensitive exposes you to twice the pain, stress and irritation, but it doesn’t mean that you can’t have beautiful skin. Apply the above tips and you’ll see drastic improvement in no time!
