Everyone who keeps living will get old one day, and there is nothing wrong with getting old. In fact, it is an honor and a privilege to be able to celebrate longevity. People all over the world are celebrating National Senior Citizens Day on August 21 based on the proclamation President Ronald Reagan made in 1988.

Definition

The dictionary definition of a senior citizen is not exactly correct. According to most dictionaries, it is one who has retired and is living on a pension. Some people retire before they get old, and some Older People don't get enough money to live on a pension.

Some dictionaries define it as a person at the age of 65 and older.

According to the government where it matters the most, a senior is a person at the age when social security and medical benefits become available. Full benefits don't kick in until a person is 65, but some benefits are available at age 62 when a person is eligible to retire. The retirement age varies, and by 2027, the retirement age will be from 65 to 67. That's because of a higher life expectancy.

Not all reports have the same definition of a senior, but the age is in the general area. The traditional definition says it is anyone 60 years of age and older. According to AARP, formerly the American Association of Retired Persons, a membership card is sent to people when they turn 50, but that's not the true age of a senior citizen.

Companies offer discounts

Some companies recognize senior citizens by offering them special discounts on items and services. Not all companies have the same age requirement, and not all companies give the same reward. Denny's and other restaurants give a discount for people age 55 and over. Some fast-food restaurants give a free small drink with the meal to those over a certain age.

Theaters offer discounts on movie tickets to people 60 years and older. Some thrift stores, such as Goodwill and the Salvation Army have designated Senior Discount Days for people over the age of 55. Automobile insurance companies, travel agencies, and hotels offer discounts.

The most important thing is that you must ask for some of the discounts.

Cashiers are not going to offer a discount based on somebody's gray hair or other signs that a person might be a senior citizen. The average age is 60 for most companies to give discounts.

If you are a senior citizen, ask for special promotions, discounts, and giveaways at the places where you do business.
