"Chrono Trigger" was one of those titles that everyone knew growing up. It was originally released for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1995. It was published by the popular company Square. The gameplay is from a top-down perspective and is a pure role-playing experience.

What is 'Chrono Trigger?'

The game takes place in a world like Earth, and involves (you guessed it), time travel. The story is immense and immersive. The gameplay was also revolutionary for its day. It is easy to see why this game did so well when you look at some of the designers involved.

Among them were the creators of "Final Fantasy" and the artist for "Dragon Ball." There was a side story game created and an actual sequel put out titled "Chrono Cross." The last game in the series was released in 1999 and there are no plans for a new one. Regardless, "Chrono Trigger" still has some serious fans out there. This was helped by a few re-releases of the game to platforms such as Android and IOS. These games have numerous downloads, which gives the impression that fans love the ability to still play the original.

So, wouldn’t a 'Chrono Trigger' release today be great?

Well, not necessarily. The game has been released for PC via Steam and is available for download at the cost of $14.99.

The game comes with some exclusive content that was only featured on mobile versions in the past. It also comes with some PC exclusive features such as the “Dimensional Vortex” dungeon and “Lost Sanctum Dungeon.” Square also states the graphics, audio, and controls have been updated for this release. Finally, an auto-save function is provided as well.

All of this sounds like a pretty good deal for fans of the series, so what could go wrong?

It would seem that fans know and love their games. Numerous gamers reviewing the new port have reported that the game is more like a port of the mobile version than the original SNES game. They compare the graphics as well as the font and say it looks more like a quick rehash of the IOS or Android versions.

Those complaints aside, it is also a good way for people who did not experience the original game to enjoy what is often listed among the best video games of all time.

For those who want to purchase the game, there is a special edition available until April 2, 2018. According to Square-Enix, this edition comes with six custom wallpapers, the composer’s digital notes, and five songs exclusive to this version of the new release.
