Sometimes players are late bloomers. Others may reach their prime later than most.

Here are seven current major league players whose play has given them a chance to be named an All-Star for the first time for anyone over 30.

1

Kirby Yates - Padres (RP), Age: 32

After four nondescript seasons from 2014-17, Yates began to take form, as a reliable reliever, in 2018. This year, he leads the majors with 23 saves while sporting an ERA of 0.96, a WHIP of 0.86, and has totaled 48 strikeouts in just 28 innings. According to CBS Sports, he hasn't given up a run since May 4.

2

Mike Minor - Rangers (SP), Age: 31

Entering 2019, Minor hadn't had an ERA under four as a starter since 2013 (had a 2.55 ERA in relief with the Royals in 2017). Through his first 14 starts of 2019, his ERA is 2.52 (fifth in the AL), and he has allowed just two or less earned runs in 10 of his outings.

3

Hyun Jin-Ryu - Dodgers (SP), Age: 32

While Ryu has looked like a top-notch starting pitcher at times, injuries had limited him to just 40 starts since 2014 entering this season. All he has done in his first 13 starts of 2019 is rank first in the majors in ERA (1.36), second in WHIP (0.80), and own an outstanding strikeout to walk ratio of 77 to 5. MLB.com recently talked about his rise to superstardom.

4

Eduardo Escobar - Diamondbacks (3B), Age: 30

While Escobar combined for 44 long balls in 2017-18, he didn't quite perform at an All-Star level. He has played superbly in 2019 batting .299 with 17 homers (tied for 10th in NL) and 54 RBIs (tied for third in NL).

5

Carlos Santana - Indians (1B), Age: 33

In what is a somewhat weak positional group (AL first basemen), Santana has been one of the most productive at the position. He has as many walks as strikeouts (44), and is currently batting .285 with 12 home runs.

6

Tommy La Stella - Angels (2B/3B), Age: 30

Mostly utilized as a bench player, La Stella had a grand total of just 10 homers in 828 at bats going into this season. He has already surpassed his previous career total with 15 in 218 at bats in 2019, and he also is hitting .307.

7

Robinson Chirinos - Astros (C), Age: 35

Chirinos always showed pop in his bat (35 home runs in 2017-18), but he also struck out a lot with a low average. While his .240 average this season isn't spectacular, he is striking out less, has a .375 on-base percentage, is tied for third among AL catchers with 11 homers, and tied for second with 11 doubles.
