Yu Darvish is still broken
All the talk after Darvish's first start was that he simply wasn't focusing well enough. On Thursday night, the $126 million man lasted just four innings, allowing five hits, four walks and and three runs. He only struck out two. Even more concerning than his lack of control once again was that his velocity is still down and he's having issues putting hitters away. That was a problem last year, before he went on the DL. So is he hurt, or just not effective anymore. It's one or the other.
Carl Edwards should be Iowa bound
Speaking of broken...Carl Edwards appears completely lost right now. The reliever made his third appearance of the season and his second appearance without recording an out. He walked two, allowed two runs and had a wild pitch. In those three appearances, he's allowed two hits, five walks, five runs, and struck out just one batter in one official inning of work. He needs to go down and work on things because he's a total disaster on the major league level.
Zagunis should be platooning with Heyward, not Schwarber
In his first two starts of the season, rookie outfielder Mark Zagunis was platooning with Kyle Schwarber. On Thursday night, he got the start in right field for Jason Heyward. Zagunis has looked a bit lost on defense so far this year, but all he's done is hit on offense. He went 2-for-4 for his second straight game and is 5-for-10 on the season with three doubles and two RBI.
Kris Bryant needs to start hitting it in the air
After a solid start in Texas, Bryant is starting to concern people with the number of ground balls he's hitting. While he did get a hit last night, he also looked like he's not swinging the bat with much authority. That needs to change.
The bullpen isn't just blowing leads
Yes, three of the Cubs' five losses this season have come because the bullpen blew a lead. But that's not the whole story. They bullpen hasn't been great even when the game is just close. On Monday, the Cubs lost 8-0 to the Braves. Randy Rosario allowed a run in just one inning of work. Last night, the pen allowed six runs in four innings. It's not a matter of being clutch, or choking. It's about not being very good at all. That's a real problem.
