After looking at the best recent draft picks by the teams who currently have the first five picks in April's draft (Cardinals, 49ers, Jets, Raiders, Buccaneers), it’s time to look at the Giants who currently have the sixth pick. Daniel Jeremiah of NFL.com pegs them to take Ohio State quarterback Dwayne Haskins with that selection.
It has been an up-and-down past two decades for the Giants. They have reached the highest of highs twice in that time though by winning the Super Bowl in the 2007 and 2011 seasons. Many of the players on this list helped them reach the ultimate goal in football.
Note: Only time with the Giants was considered for the list. Before everyone goes up in arms about Eli Manning not being on here, he was actually drafted by the Chargers and traded the same day. Also, where they were drafted makes a difference - meaning this isn’t quite a top-ten players drafted by New York since 2000 list. Some late-round picks who did not quite make the list but had solid careers with the team include Brandon Short (fourth round, 2000), Dhani Jones (sixth round, 2000), Gibril Wilson (fifth round, 2004), Barry Cofield (fourth round, 2006), Kevin Boss (fifth round, 2007), and Devon Kennard (fifth round, 2014).
Odell Beckham Jr., WR - 1st round, 12th overall (2014); time with Giants: 2014-present
The 2014 Offensive Rookie of the Year, Beckham Jr. has already established himself as one of the top receivers in the game. In his first 59 games, he has totaled 390 receptions for 5,476 yards and 44 touchdowns.
Saquon Barkley, RB - 1st round, 2nd overall (2018); time with Giants: 2018-present
Barkley's rookie season, which culminated with his earning Rookie of the Year honors, was so dominant that he is already second on the list. He rushed for 1,307 yards, had another 721 receiving (on an astounding 91 catches), and scored 15 total touchdowns. 247Sports reported how Jonathan Stewart believes Barkley could become the best of all-time at the running back position.
Chris Snee, G - 2nd round, 34th overall (2004); time with Giants: 2004-2013
For the entirety of his 141 game career, Snee was a member of the Giants. The right guard earned four trips to the Pro Bowl and was named First Team All-Pro in 2008.
Justin Tuck, DE - 3rd round, 74th overall (2005); time with Giants: 2005-2013
Tuck was named First Team All-Pro in 2008 and twice made the Pro Bowl. He finished with 60.5 sacks with the team which includes four seasons with a double-digit sack total.
Osi Umenyiora, DE - 2nd round, 56th overall (2003); time with Giants: 2003-2012
Both Umenyiora and Tuck were a member of the two recent Super Bowl-winning teams. Both did well at pressuring the quarterback at all times. Umenyiora sacked the opposing quarterback 75 times with the Giants.
Jason Pierre-Paul, DE - 1st round, 15th overall (2010); time with Giants: 2010-2017
In his second year in the league, JPP had 16.5 sacks which helped him receive a spot as a First Team All-Pro (Giants also won the Super Bowl that season). Altogether, he totaled 58.5 sacks in a Giants uniform.
Ahmad Bradshaw, RB - 7th round, 250th overall (2007); time with Giants: 2007-2012
One of the last picks of the 2007 draft, Bradshaw established himself a runner who needed to be game-planned for with the Giants. In his six seasons with New York, he rushed for 4,232 yards and 32 touchdowns (added another 12 receiving scores).
Brandon Jaocbs, RB - 4th round, 110th overall (2005); time with Giants: 2005-2011, 2013
A bruiser in the backfield, Jacobs went over the 1,000-yard mark back-to-back seasons in 2007 and 2008. His Giants tenure consisted of 5,087 rushing yards and 60 touchdowns. Bradshaw got the slight edge over him mostly because he was such a late draft choice.
Landon Collins, S - 2nd round, 33rd overall (2015); time with Giants: 2015-present
Unfortunately, Collins may not play again for the team after they decided not to use the franchise tag on him which makes him an unrestricted free agent. The safety has made 428 tackles in four seasons, earned Pro Bowl visits each of the last three years, and was named a First Team All-Pro in 2016.
Jeremy Shockey - 1st round, 14th overall (2002); time with Giants: 2002-2007
Shockey was a First Team All-Pro in his very first season and made four Pro Bowls as a New York Giant. His time with the Giants consisted of 371 catches for 4,228 yards and 27 touchdowns.
