The Nebraska baseball team opened a weekend series against 21st ranked Baylor on Friday night. This was a series that was supposed to take place in Lincoln, but was moved to Waco because of the cold, snow, and ice all over the state of Nebraska these days. It appears the Huskers decided to treat the Bears' home field as though it were their own, as they won the game 12-4.

Thanks to the blowout win, several things stood out in the game.

1

Angelo Altavilla breaks out

Altavilla hadn't been having a great start to the year. He came into Friday's game hitting just .268 and he hadn't gone yard yet. He'll lay his head on his pillow knowing he's raised his average to .283. He also hit his first two homers of the season and drove in five (5!) runs in the victory.

2

Huskers have found their Friday starter

Matt Waldron got his first start of the season last weekend and had a stellar outing as he shut down Texas Tech. Tonight he pitched seven innings and allowed just one earned run. He also struck out a career high eight. He's now 2-0 with a 2.25 ERA and should get the nod from here on out in series openers.

3

Luke Roskam joins the party

If Altavilla was struggling a bit to start the season, then Luke Roskam's start to the season was positively tortured. Coming into Friday night he was hitting just .189 but he went 4-for-6 against the 21st ranked team in the country while driving in four. He also hit his first homer of the season.

4

The bullpen is still a problem

It's hard to find a negative when you absolutely drill a Top 25 ranked team on the road. Still, there was one. The Nebraska baseball team's bullpen has been suspect at best so far this season. On Friday, Chad Luensman entered the 9th with a 12-2 lead and had some real control issues that led to two runs scoring. This is the first game the team has played since the pen blew a 9-2 lead against Sam Houston State last weekend.

5

The Huskers could be for real

Nebraska has had a killer schedule to start the year. While they got routed by #7 Oregon State in the second weekend of the season, they've looked like a different team. Had the aforementioned pen been better, we'd be talking about the team reeling off three straight wins and two of those against Top 25 squads.,
