Diet is very important when talking about menstruation. During menstruation, hormones rise drastically. Therefore, it is vital to be mindful of what you eat as some foods can aggravate the symptoms of PMS. Below, I share five foods that I think you should avoid.
Sugar-rich foods
Sugar-rich foods should be avoided at all cost, due to their pro-inflammatory properties. The consumption of spicy foods during the period could result in cramping, gas, and bloating. However, some natural organic spices, such as fresh chili, coriander, cardamom, and saffron could be beneficial at this time, as they aid digestion and relieves menstrual discomfort.
Fried foods
Fried foods elevate estrogen levels and cause mood swings, period pain, and inflammation when eating during menstruation; especially when they contain hydrogenated vegetable oil or trans fat.
Carbonated drinks
Carbonated drinks, such as soda, should be avoided during a period because they contribute to bloating and water retention, which could lead to discomfort.
Processed foods
Eating processed foods during menstruation might only make it worse. High sodium foods are the major culprits in the bloating game, as processed foods are the biggest sources of sodium in the diet.
Refined grains
During menstruation, it is better to choose whole grains over refined ones, because, during processing, the refined grains lose their nutrient content.
