Twelve boys and their soccer coach rescued after being trapped in a cave in Thailand
This past summer, a soccer team and their coach made a visit to the Tham Luang cave in Thailand. After entering, heavy rains flooded the cave and trapped them all inside. An international crew of rescuers made up of more than 100 divers managed to rescue the boys in the cave. However, there was one fatality: a former Thai Navy SEAL died while providing oxygen to the boys in the cave.
Facebook's Cambridge Analytica admits personal information was compromised
Cambridge Analytica accessed data from Facebook users during the 2016 election cycle, without permission from users. However, people did not find out until March 2018. The data breach gathered information about users identities, networks and likes, in hopes of identifying their voting patterns. CEO Mark Zuckerberg testified before Congress in April 2018 and said, "It was my mistake, and I'm sorry."
Kim Jong Un agrees to denuclearize
During a June summit in Singapore, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un announced an agreement to denuclearize his country. The pair of leaders were criticized for not providing a specific plan or proof of denuclearization.
Iraq holds first election since kicking out ISIS
Iraqi voters took to the polls this year, for the first time since beating out ISIS from their country in 2017 after the Iraq Civil War. Iraqis were given the power to decide the future of their country. Iraq ended up electing a new prime minister and president.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle say I do
The world tuned in as the Royal Family held another wedding. This year Prince Harry married American actress Meghan Markle on May 19. More than 29 million Americans tuned in to watch the wedding.
