This past year was big for movies, and blockbuster superhero flicks led the way. Overall, records were set this summer, and Thanksgiving, and Christmas. When it's all said and done, this looks to be the first year in which a $12 billion box office was achieved. Here are the five films that led the way in 2018.

1

Black Panther

The Marvel comics superhero flick "Black Panther" led the way at the box office this past year with over $700,000,000 earned. It's also earned a number of honors including Golden Globe nominations and a spot on the AFI Top 10 films of the year list.

2

Avengers: Infinity War

Marvel takes the second spot, for the past year, with their blockbuster "Avengers" film. "Infinity War" generated $678,815,482 in total gross revenue. It's the first of the final two in the "Avengers" series, meaning Marvel has more big numbers to come in 2019. There's also "Captain Marvel" on the way ahead of the Avengers and then Spider-Man. The superhero fun just won't stop!

3

Incredibles 2

The only animated film to appear in the top five, but its another of the four superhero movies that helped the box office. "Incredibles 2" is a sequel that arrived 14 years after the original from Disney/Pixar. "Incredibles 2" earned a gross of $608,581,744 this past year.

4

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom

The only non-superhero entry in the top five features those larger than life creatures of the past. "Fallen Kingdom" was met with mixed reviews based on some of the plot and sequel set-up. However, it interested audiences enough to capture a total gross of $416,769,345.

5

Deadpool 2

The Merc with a Mouth was back at it in a highly-successful sequel. They even released a Christmas edition for the holidays. "Deadpool 2" took in $318,491,426 which was ironically ahead of the No. 6 film "Dr. Seuss' The Grinch."
