There are days when you want to read something that is both charming and attractive but you cannot decide. Looking for an article that can suggest some really good books? You are in the right place. Here are my top four suggested books that you can read by this Albanian author. His works have been published in about 45 languages. Did you know there are nearly 100 thousand Albanian-Americans in the USA?
'Broken April'
This is my favourite book from the well-known writer Ismail Kadare. It speaks about April which is the worst month for the main character who is Gjon Berisha. After the killing of his brother he is obligated to take revenge and the most interesting fact is that revenge in Albania was a tradition and still is for some people nowadays. So Gjon has to kill someone from the tribe of his brother's killer but unfortunately he just injuries the man and that means Gjon has to pay for the blood.
'Chronicle in Stone'
"Chronicle in Stone" is about Gjirokastra, a town in Albania where the author was born and grew up. It speaks about a time in which Gjirokastra was invaded in World War II. This is a humoruos novel and is confessed via the eyes of a child. It is full of curiosities for Albanians during that period and speaks about the steep and ancient city which now is protected by UNESCO.
'The General of the Dead Army'
This book is about an Italian General whose duty is to collect the bones of Italian citizens burried in Albania during World War II. He goes into every grave and unburies Italian soldiers. Along with his companion, a priest, he goes to the deepest places of Albania and there he gets to meet another general but this one is a German who does the same thing and questions his work.
'Doruntine' book
This is a book based on the old Albanian legend of Constantin and Doruntine which is well-known for all in Albania. Ismail Kadare has given literature another point of view with his book translated into more than 12 languages.
