2018 was a year full of up and downs for people, part of this is due to the number of celebrity deaths that occurred this year. Some of those that passed away include musicians, novelists and civil rights activists.
Stephen Hawking
Stephen Hawking is best known for his ground-breaking research on black holes and the cosmos. He was diagnosed with ALS, at the age of 21. Hawking left behind three children and three grandchildren.
Winnie Madikizela
Winnie Madikizela, better known as Winnie Madikizela Mandela, died on April 2 at the age of 81. She was married to Nelson Mandela for 38 years. While they divorced in 1996, they continued to work together. Winnie was an anti-apartheid activist and became known as the "Mother of the Nation."
Aretha Franklin
Aretha Franklin is one of America's greatest civil rights activists and singers. In 1966, she signed with Atlantic Records, and recorded many hits including "Respect," and "I Say a Little Prayer." The "Queen of Soul" became the first woman to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1987.
Mr. Stan Lee
Comic book lovers mourned the passing of Stan Lee on Nov. 12. He was 95. Lee is best known for the creation of characters live Spider-Man, X-Men, Iron-Man and many others. Lee's wife Joan Lee died in 2017.
Kate Spade
Kate Spade, known mostly for her family connection to David Spade, ended up committing suicide on June 5. Kate Spade made a name for herself, through her handbag line. The Kate Spade label expanded to include shoes, furniture and baby gifts.
