Real evidence on the effect of soda?
Soda and sugary beverages have long been linked to a larger waistline.
A new study from Mexico’s National Institute of Public Health looked at how soft drinks are linked to a change in weight over two years. This research was carried out on 11,000 women living in Mexico. They were questioned on their intake of soda -- both sugar-sweetened (regular) and artificially sweetened (diet) in 2006 and again in 2008. They were also asked about their weight and waistline.
The researchers encouraged them to adjust their lifestyle and consider cutting down their sugar intake because of the health problems associated with it. Within a week it was discovered that the women who stopped consuming soda and other sugary beverages weighed almost a pound less than those who didn’t cut down on their soda intake.
Although a lot of us may look at the pounds gained as just small numbers, gradual weight gain may lead to several terrifying health problems, so finding ways to control it at an early stage is very important. Soda makes you fat (even diet soda) because it is high in calories, and unfortunately, has no nutritional value whatsoever.
Soda contributes to obesity as well as diabetes, liver damage, kidney stones, osteoporosis, high blood pressure, heart disease, stomach and digestion problems, weakened bones and tooth decay. Some researchers even suggests that soda can make you feel hungrier, given that the artificial sweeteners send signals to the brain that make it crave extra food, which in turn makes losing weight very difficult.
