Freedom Ship International, based in Winter Springs, Florida, is planning to build the world’s first mobile ocean city that would provide comfortable residential facilities for 40,000 people.
The idea of a Floating City project was initially proposed in the late 1990s. Freedom Ship International was supposed to complete the construction of the floating ship in 2001, but it did not happen, probably due to financial problems. The company has yet to announce a construction date for the ship that is estimated to cost up to $10 billion.
Floating city will have airport, shopping centers, schools, hospital
The floating city project, named Freedom Ship, would float around the world. It is planned to be a modern city, boasting an airport, shopping malls, a school system, a hospital, and entertainment centers.
Freedom Ship International is planning to design a 4,500 feet long, 750 feet wide, and 350 feet high vessel to build a mobile ocean city. The ship would be more than four times longer than the Queen Mary, according to the company.
The giant ship would have residential space, a library, schools, a hospital, retail/wholesale shops, restaurants, banks, hotels, entertainment facilities, offices, as well as light manufacturing and assembly plants.
The city would also have a range of recreational and athletic facilities, according to the project’s website.
In addition, on the top deck of the ship, there is planned to be a small airport for private, small commercial aircraft, and helicopters. The city would allow residents to own private aircraft and helicopters. The airport would have a flight training school.
Ocean city will house 40,000 people
The ship’s commercial district would offer housing facilities for 40,000 people. In addition, the mobile city would offer a space for 30,000 daily visitors, 20,000 crew members, and 10,000 overnight guests.
There is planned to be an adequate transportation infrastructure in the commercial district.
There would be a port authority and an onboard subway system as well as the airport on the top deck.
The floating ship would build a first-class school system as well as a state-of-the-art hospital. In addition, the city would boast hotels, casinos, and a large convention center. It would also have sports facilities for basketball, soccer, tennis, track, swimming and diving, gymnastics, football, and hockey.
The floating city would circle the world and would go to most of the world's coastal regions. The ship would be subject to international maritime law and the laws of the country whose flag it carries. It would operate under the same rules and regulations as a cruise ship, according to Freedom Ship International.
The ship is set to cost $10 billion. Freedom Ship International recently formed a partnership with India-based Kanethra Group to design the ship. The company has yet to announce a date for the construction of the mega ship.
