The first of three Publix Grocery Stores opened in the Richmond, Virginia area on Saturday, July 15. People waited in line long before Publix opened at 7 a.m. in the Nuckols Place shopping center in Henrico County. Shoppers will come and go until the store closes at 10 p.m.

About Publix

Publix is based in Lakeland, Florida with more than 1,147 stores in seven states in the south. Virginia becomes the eighth state. The aim of the store is to bring the southern grocery shopping experience to Richmond and surrounding areas. Over the next year and a half, Publix will hire more than 1,800 employees to help handle the many customers the grocery store is expecting.

Those who want to apply for a position at Publix can be assured they will be valued. According to records, the chain has not had a layoff in its 87 years in the grocery business.

Publix is more than a grocery store. People are receiving Publix in their community because the store will be involved in community relations. For instance, on Friday a day before the store received a penny from customers in the community, it was already helping the neighbors. Publix presented $500 checks to 10 schools located within four miles of the store. Also, Publix helps the community by buying supplies from local businesses.

Other stores

Another Publix store will open on July 29 at in the Shoppes at CrossRidge on Staples Mill Road.

The third grocery store will open on August 5 at the White Oak Village on Laburnum Avenue.

Publix is slated to open at least ten more Richmond area stores. The store that opened on Saturday is in a building that was constructed just for Publix. The other store constructed from the ground up will be located off of Mechanicsville Turnpike in Hanover County.

The remaining ten Publix stores are moving into buildings that Martin’s Food Markets used to occupy. Those buildings for Publix are being renovated one at a time.

New grocery stores

Richmond, Virginia must love accepting new grocery store chains. Publix is not the only grocery store coming to the area. Lidl is set to open four stores in Richmond on July 27.

That's the second German store for Richmond shoppers. Lidl's top competitor, Aldi grocery chain, opened about two years ago throughout the area.

Wegmans Food Markets opened in two locations last year on opposite ends of the city to be available for all customers. Have you ever shopped at Publix or any of the other grocery stores?
