With climate change making headlines every day the Dutch produce supplier Nature & More has started to change the way that they are selling their goods. Instead of a sticker to denote the price and place of origin they are essentially branding it with strong lights which remove the pigment and leaves the company's logo imprinted upon the fruit. This technique has the possibility to change the way that produce is not only marketed but also how it travels from country to country. Nature & More's new method of labeling produce might become the wave of the near future.
laser branding: the future is here
The logo that is being imprinted on the produce is done so with strong lights which removes color from the skin. It is invisible once the skin is removed and it doesn't appear to affect the shelf life or flavor of the end product. Even though it seems crazy the think that a laser is somehow cheaper than stickers there are a lot of ingredients in making a sticker. From glue to plastic these have to be produced over and over again in quantities so large that they can be difficult to imagine. A laser on the other hand is produced once and makes for a one time investment. That is what Stephanie Merit, a manager at the company which brings lasers and fruits together, has said.
She believes that companies like hers will help make a "significant reduction in paper, glue and ink."
consumers are making and impact on climate change
With the reduction in packaging which pollutes customers are taking notice. Sustainability has made a large impact on the food industry and is even beginning to make fundamental changes to the way that things are done.
Millennials are more likely to shop from a brand which gives back to the environment as opposed to one that is wasteful. As they begin to make a larger and larger share of consumers in the market that sort of thinking is being reflected in how companies move forward. The future is certainly here. From lasers to genetically modified food these are not your grandmother's vegetables.
