Manchester City dejected top-six Premier League teams this season when they won their 18th consecutive match. They had amped their lead to eighteen points even before playing the 20th round. They won the 2017-18 title before Christmas as none of the teams were in the chasing range.
Although five months are still remaining before this season ends, the teams have started the preparation for the 2018-19 season already. Manchester City is far beyond the reach of any team.
Only Manchester United gave City any competition, but merely for first three or four months of the season.
The Citizens made their intentions clear when they beat their local rivals, Man Utd, by 2-1 on December 10. The win also handed City an 11 point lead on the top.
Given that the title race is over already, here’s how top Premier League Teams should prepare for the next season.
Arsenal
Nothing is going in Arsenal’s favor this season. They were sixth on the points table on New Year's day. Arsene Wenger, Arsenal's manager, failed to sign a major player for his defense problem and its aftermath has been hurting the team dearly.
Their defensive errors have been costing them as they've conceded many goals against top Premier League teams. Wenger will have to have a top center-back defender before they kick-off the 2018-19 season.
Man United
There are a lot of things that Jose Mourinho, United boss, needs to sort out before heading into the new season. Their sublime performance, in the beginning, gave United fans hope for the 21st Premier League title. However, losing to Huddersfield, Chelsea and Man City made them pay by losing the title.
United signed Nemanja Matic last summer, but it didn’t help Jose much as they struggled in the midfield battles in many games.
According to a report in The Sun, Jose is willing to sign the Juventus star midfielder, Paulo Dybala. The Juve star also claimed, in a recent interview, that he is friends with United’s current midfielder, Paul Pogba, as they’ve played together at Juve and he also said that his future is uncertain at Juve.
Chelsea
Chelsea didn’t start this season as the reigning champions.
They dropped points in the first few matches. However, their current performance has certainly shadowed their past performance of this season. They are now fighting with Man United for the second position.
Even though they have improved their performance, they need to compete with top teams in the transfer market to win 2018-19 season. Antonio Conte, Chelsea boss, will have to bring in a defensive and an attacking player before the 2018-19 season starts.
Chelsea struggled without their main players like Eden Hazard and Alvaro Morata. Conte will have to find their replacements to replace them in unfortunate contingencies.
Liverpool
Liverpool’s been playing bad defensively as much as Arsenal. Unorganized defensive tactics cost them in conceding most goals compared to top-six teams.
Jurgen Klopp, Liverpool boss, signed Mo. Salah last summer and it proved to be one of his best signings ever at Liverpool.
However, He also failed to bring a major defensive player which has been proving a wrong decision. However, Klopp has signed the Southampton midfielder, Van Dijk, this winter transfer window.
The Reds’ fans are expecting him to be a good pick and prove his worth at Anfield. Given a major defender has been signed, Klopp still needs to do some transfer market transactions before the 2018-19 season.
Man City
Having claimed the title already, Pep Guardiola, Man City boss, also needs to sort out some problems before taking charge of a fresh season. Man City has been performing extremely well in every position.
However, they also have some midfield problems. The Kevin-Silva alliance has been taking control of the midfield very well, but lately, their absence affected the team’s performance. They played a 0-0 draw against Crystal Palace, a team who’s been struggling to get rid of the relegation zone. Crystal Palace’s solid performance helped them in taking one point against the league leader. They also halted City’s winning streak at 18 games.
Tottenham
Mauricio Pochettino, the Tottenham boss, has struggled badly to stop top-six teams from scoring goals against them. His record against top teams is not good at all.
Tottenham finished second in the last season but failed to reflect the same performance this season.
They are struggling with consistency and their defensive tactics have played a big role in their performance. Defensively, they struggled and conceded crucial goals in big matches.
Same as other top teams, Tottenham will have to make some transactions in the summer transfer window and kick-off the 2018-19 season with a more confident defensive line.
