This transfer window broke the record of total spending in a transfer window ever. Each team tried to lure players the way they could. Some Premier League veterans admitted that every upcoming transfer window would break this record. The most expensive player for United was Romelo Lukaku. Jose signed him to a five-year contract, with an option to extend for a further year from Everton for 85M€.
Jose signed another three players Victor Lindelof from Benfica, Nemanja Matic from Chelsea, and Zlatan Ibrahimovic (free agent). Overall Jose must be happy with Man Utd's business this transfer window.
He wanted mainly four players, in the beginning, Lindelof for the center back position, Matic for defensive midfield position, Lukaku or Alvaro Morata for striking position, and Ivan Peresic for Left-Wing position. Jose successfully signed three players out of four that he wanted. He couldn't bring Peresic from Inter Milan due to fee disagreement between the two clubs.
Victor Lindelof
Jose wanted this center back player since last year. He was so desperate to land former Benfica player to solve his defensive problems. Jose couldn't land him in last season's summer or winter transfer window since Benfica did not have any good alternative player in their team for the same position.
On 30th June of this summer transfer window, United officially announced the signing the 22 years old Sweden international for around 35M € from Benfica on a four-year contract with an option for extending the contract for a further year.
So far, he has been featured in three friendly matches and a Super Cup match in the red jersey. Since he struggled to perform up to mark in these games, Jose decided to give him some time to adapt to Premier League style of play. He is yet to be featured in a Premier League match for United.
Jose will probably first test him in an FA Cup or EFL game before letting him be a starter for United in the Premier League games.
Romelo Lukaku
Jose was on a hunt for a striker who must have strength, accurate finishing, and a goal machine. Jose had two players in the option to fulfill this position, Alvaro Morata, and Romelo Lukaku. Jose's team struggled last season to score goals so this year he had to sign a good striker. Belgian international was a priority for Jose over Morata.
Lukaku is used to the Premier League style whereas Morata was a Real Madrid player and playing in Spanish elite soccer tournament La Liga.
On 9th July, United proclaimed Lukaku's signing from Everton for a total amount of 85M €. United signed him on a five-year contract with an option to extend for a further year. A few days later, Chelsea announced the signing of Alvaro Morata from Real Madrid.
Lukaku has been featured in every match for United so far. He has played three Premier League games for United in which he scored three goals. Last year Lukaku was the runner-up for the golden boot race in the Premier League while playing for Everton. He is now on the top of the same list after playing three Premier League games.
It'll be interesting to see could he be able to win golden boot this season playing for United or not.
Nemanja Matic
Matic played a significant role for Chelsea last year to be the Champions of the Premier League. On 9th July, United announced the signing of 29 years old Serbian player for a total amount of 40M €. Matic has worked under Jose in his Chelsea managerial career. Jose helped Matic to be an established player in the Chelsea squad. He has been a favorite player of Jose from his first day at Stamford Bridge.
The primary purpose of bringing Matic was to let Pogba play a more attacking role. He has started every Manchester United match for United so far and proved his worth. He has played all the first three Premier League match for United, and he performed up to mark in each of these games.
Pogba now plays a more attacking role in the midfield. Pogba has scored two goals in three games this Premier League season.
However, his former boss Antonio Conte claimed that he didn't want to sell Matic and Chelsea's board did decide to sell him. He also proclaimed that this transfer had twisted his some pre-decided plans. Chelsea also looked to be struggling in the midfield in their first few Premier League match after selling Matic to United.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic
Zlatan played for United last season. He helped United to win UEFA Europa League and EFL Cup. However, he didn't play last few matches of Europa League including finals against Ajax due to his injury against Anderlecht in Europa League.
Few United fans thought 33 years old striker had played his last game for United.
On 25th July, United announced that Ibrahimovic has again signed a one year contract with Manchester United. According to Man Utd's statements, Jose has left him free to be fit again for matches. He is unlikely to make a comeback for United for next two to three months.
