Denis Istomin spoiled Frenchman Richard Gasquet’s first match in Metz since 2001, ousting the sixth seed with a 1-6, 6-4, 6-4 win in the opening round of the Moselle Open Tuesday. The No. 82-ranked Istomin saved 10 of the 13 break points to beat Gasquet in one hour and 54 minutes, improving his record against the Frenchman to 2-6. Istomin will next play face lucky loser Yannick Maden, who defeated Nicolas Kicker, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.

Seventh seed Benoit Paire advanced to the next round after beating Greek qualifier Stefanos Tsitsipas in straight sets in 57 minutes.

Paire will next challenge 2012 finalist Marcel Granollers of Spain, a 7-6(9), 3-6, 7-6(8) winner over Italian qualifier Simone Bolelli. Nicolas Almagro hit 10 aces en route to a 7-6(3), 7-5 triumph over Frenchman Julien Benneteau. Almagro will face second seed David Goffin for a place in the quarterfinals. In other matches, Nikoloz Basilashvili beat Vincent Millot, 2-6, 7-(5), 6-4 and Peter Gojowczyk ousted Norbert Gombos, in three sets. Earlier, top seed Pablo Carreno Busta withdrew from the tournament due to left-hand injury.

Russian Mikhail Youzhny shines in hometown event

In Russia, hometown favorite Mikhail Youzhny beat Australian qualifier John-Patrick Smith, 7-6(6), 6-4 in one hour and 33 minutes in the opening round of the St.

Petersburg Open. Youzhny, who is participating in the event for the 16th time, will next face third seed Fabio Fognini in the second round. Seventh seed Viktor Troicki hit nine aces en route to a two-set win over Andrey Kuznetsov in one hour and 45 minutes.

In other matches, No. 242 Liam Broady defeated fellow qualifier and 2013 titlist Ernests Gulbis, 6-3, 6-0, in 63 minutes to reach the next round against fourth seed Adrian Mannarino of France.

Ricardas Berankis arranged a second-round showdown against fifth seed Philipp Kohlschreiber after beating qualifier Daniel Masur, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.

Jelena Ostapenko reaches 2nd round in South Korea

In her first match as a top 10 player, top seed and French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko defeated Johanna Larsson in straight sets in the first round of the KEB Hana Bank-Incheon Airport Korea Open.

In the next round, the world No. 10 Ostapenko will take on Nao Hibino, a straight-set winner over Kai-Chen Chang. Other winners were Richel Hogenkamp, Arantxa Rus, Na-Lae Han and Nicole Gibbs.

In Tokyo, fifth seed Dominika Cibulkova opened her Toray Pan Pacific Open campaign with a straight-set win over Carla Suárez Navarro. In the second round, Cibulkota will next play Katerina Siniakova, who defeated Jana Cepelova.
