Venus Williams produced a comeback victory, Konta won the thriller
Venus Williams was in a very difficult situation against the Chinese player Qiang Wang.
Williams lost the first set 6-4 and was in serious trouble while serving in the second set at 3-3. She saved two break points and then found the way to break Wang's serve in the final game of the second set. Williams then started to play like a true champion, as she won the third set 6-1. Her next opponent will be Naomi Osaka, who beat Barbora Strycova in three sets.
Ana Konjuh, a young Croatian star, survived a three-set battle against Irina Begu. Konjuh won the first set in a tie-break, but then lost the second set 6-2. However, she secured the victory with the three breaks of serve in the final set. Konjuh will play against Dominika Cibulkova in the third round.
Johanna Konta and Donna Vekic played the most dramatic match of the day.
Vekic had a 5-4 lead in the first set and two set points on her serve, but couldn't finish the job, as Konta took the set in a tie-break. Donna responded with a great performance in the second set, as she tied the match at one apiece.
The Centre Court crowd witnessed a real drama in the final set, as both players were serving extraordinary. Finally, Konta broke Vekic's serve in the 18th game of the set, taking advantage of her second match point. The final result was 7-6 4-6 10-8 in the favor of Konta. She'll face Maria Sakkari in the second round.
