Wimbledon 2017 has reached the second round, and here are some interesting players that have advanced in the tournament.
Gulbis wins a Grand Slam match after a long drought
Ernests Gulbis, the former World No.10, is ranked 589th on the ATP list. He won his first Grand Slam match after the French Open last year, defeating Joao Sousa. Gulbis played only eight matches this season, losing six of them. The two wins came against low-ranked players Norbert Gombos and Sergiy Stakhovsky. Gulbis got the ideal opponent in the first round. Victor Estrella Burgos is only known for his clay court game and Gulbis took advantage of this on grass.
The Latvian won easily in straight sets after just one hour and 29 minutes of play, losing only four games in the match.Gulbis will play against Juan Martin del Potro in the second round.
Juan Martin Del Potro entered the Wimbledon still struggling with a wrist injury. However, he beat a young, talented player from Australia (Thanasi Kokkinakis) in four sets after over three hours of play. Del Potro had six match points in his final service game before he finally took advantage of his seventh.
Youzhny, Raonic advance to the second round
Former World No.8 Mikhail Youzhny opened the tournament in good form, beating Nicolas Mahut in straight sets. The Russian veteran has been struggling lately, and this was a much needed win for him.
Mahut is a grass court specialist, and Youzhny proved that he is still a dangerous player with this victory. He'll play against Milos Raonic in the next round.
Milos Raonic is not having a great season. The Wimbledon finalist from last year started the tournament in an impressive manner by beating German Jan Lennard Struff 7-6 6-2 7-6 in the first round, while losing service only once in the entire match.
Ryan Harrison had a tough opponent in the first round, as he faced the youngster Borna Coric, a great and talented player from Croatia.
