The Kansas City Chiefs made two huge moves on Thursday and one of them almost seemed to come from out of nowhere. First, the Chiefs extended the contract of head coach Andy Reid for five more years. However, despite the fact that he was there to help with the 2017 NFL Draft last month, the Chiefs have decided to fire general manager John Dorsey.
The termination of John Dorsey
The Kansas City Chiefs hired Andy Reid after he finished his career as a head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles. A few weeks later, the Chiefs hired John Dorsey to work as the general manager and the two men turned the Chiefs into playoff contenders.
However, the Chiefs shocked their fans when they fired Dorsey on Thursday.
ESPN reported that Kansas City Chiefs CEO Clark Hunt said that he chose not to extend the contract for John Dorsey past 2017. With that said, the Chiefs also didn't want Dorsey to work as a lame duck general manager in 2017, so they said it was in the best interests of both Dorsey and the Chiefs to let him go now. The Chiefs said it was mutual but a friend of Dorsey's told ESPN that Kansas City fired the general manager.
Head coach Andy Reid
Things have been successful for the Kansas City Chiefs since Andy Reid and John Dorsey joined the team. The Chiefs' record since their hire is 43-21 in the regular season. Kansas City finished 2016 as the AFC West champions.
Kansas City has made it to the playoffs in three of their last four seasons. They also won a playoff game for the first time in 22 seasons in the 2016 playoffs.
When it comes to Andy Reid, Hunt said that the Kansas City Chiefs are very pleased with the success and has seemed to credit it all to Reid's coaching rather than John Dorsey's team building.
Hunt said that Reid is one of the best coaches in the NFL and that is why they are giving him the five-year contract extension. Only Bill Belichick has won more games than Andy Reid when it comes to active NFL head coaches.
Before the signing of Andy Reid and hiring of John Dorsey, the Chiefs won four games or fewer four times in six seasons.
With Dorsey gone, The Chiefs will now look for someone else who can run the front office while Reid coaches the team on the field.
The 2017 NFL offseason has seen the release of popular wide receiver Jeremy Maclin. The Kansas City Chiefs also used their first round pick of the 2017 Nfl Draft to choose Texas Tech Red Raiders quarterback Patrick Mahomes, a player they hope will be the heir apparent to Alex Smith.
