With the most prestigious event in golf, the 81st Masters teeing off tomorrow, it would be interesting to take a look at what the average age of all past Masters winners was when they put on the green jacket, and see who in this year's field matches that criteria. Hopefully this week we will manage to see a major without a controversial moment.

Average age of winner and players who fit that

The average age of all Masters winners combined is 32 years, 5 months, and 14 days. Of the past eighty winners, 9 have been 25 or younger, 21 have been between 26-30, 30 have been between 31-35, 15 have been between 36-40, and 5 have been 41 or older.

For comparison, Tiger Woods and jordan spieth are the youngest Masters winners ever at 21-years-old. Jack Nicklaus is on the opposite end of the spectrum as the oldest winner ever at 46-years-old.

Out of all the players in the 2017 Masters field, the closest one to being the average age on Masters Sunday is German Martin Kaymer at 32 years, 3 months and 14 days. The next four closest players are South African Charl Schwartzel (32, 7, 11), Venezuelan Jhonattan Vegas (32, 7, 22), American Dustin Johnson (32, 9, 19) and Spaniard Rafael Cabrera-Bello (32,10, 17).

The real Masters contenders

Of course, projecting the winner based on their age is unlikely, as it makes more sense to pick among the best players in the world or whoever is on a hot streak going into the Masters.

Dustin Johnson is currently the world's number 1 ranked player and has been on fire recently, winning his last three tournaments, including two World Golf Championship events. Johnson is also the betting favorite to win in Vegas.

Jordan Spieth, ranked number 6 in the world, is also a strong contender to win despite last year's meltdown.

He has dominated the Masters the last three years, with one win and two second place finishes. Other popular favorites being picked by experts and bettors with a good chance to win are Northern Ireland's Rory McIIroy, Japan's Hideki Matsuyama, Australian Jason Day, and American Rickie Fowler.
