The Green Bay Packers have a few important needs this offseason as they head into the 2017 NFL Draft. The cornerback position needs help, the Packers need some running back depth, and there is a giant hole in the offensive line. T.J. Lang has left as an NFL free agent for the division rival Detroit Lions, leaving a huge hole at right guard for the Packers. The draft is where Ted Thompson usually builds his offensive line and Forrest Lamp is the best option for the team in the 2017 NFL Draft.
Forrest Lamp’s chances in Green Bay
Forrest Lamp might be the best option in the entire 2017 NFL Draft when it comes to offensive guards.
He might be one of the best technically sound guards to come along in the NFL Draft this year and could be the next great guard to come into the NFL with comparisons to Dallas Cowboys All-Pro guard Zack Martin. With T.J. Lang gone, the Green Bay Packers need instant help at right guard and there is no one on the team worthy of taking that role outside of Don Barclay or Kyle Murphy, and neither of those players offer huge upside at the position. The most important thing for this offense is to protect Aaron Rodgers, the only player who can take the Packers to the playoffs by himself. They also need to open running holes for new starting tailback Ty Montgomery since he is still learning the ropes.
Forrest Lamp is someone who can make this offense even better in 2017.
Other options for the Packers first round pick
The one thing that could stand between the Green Bay Packers and Forrest Lamp is the fact that offensive linemen are at a premium in the NFL right now. The Packers have the 29th pick in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft and there is a great chance that someone takes Lamp before it ever gets to the Packers.
That means that if Green Bay really wants Lamp, they will have to trade up in the draft to get him. With that said, there are so many other needs on defense that the Packers might not want to give up draft picks for one offensive lineman. They need help at linebacker and need to find a pass rusher. The Packers also need to bring in a starting cornerback that can develop into a number one option. Forrest Lamp is a nice dream but there are too many other spots that need to be filled unless he somehow drops to their low first round pick.
