Gonzaga is always a point of contention when it comes to College Basketball. Mark Few's team plays in the very weak WCC, which boasts only two other teams that are really competitive. Both St. Mary's and BYU have managed to make the tournament and win some games in the past, but the rest of the conference really hasn't done too much. That makes it hard for college basketball fans to accept that Gonzaga is still one of the most dominant teams in the country.
An Undefeated Season.
Gonzaga is 28-0 right now and winning by an average margin of more than twenty points.
The Bulldogs have quality wins over Arizona, Florida, Iowa State, Tennessee, and St. Mary's. Currently ranked first by Kenpom, it would seem like Gonzaga would be a lock for a one seed. But the tournament committee revealed that they believe Villanova has a better resume than the Bulldogs and would earn the number one overall seed right now. The main question that fans have to be asking is: Is that fair?
Why Doesn't Gonzaga Deserve the Top Seed?
The Bulldogs have won every single game they have played this year and they have beaten weaker teams very easily. Gonzaga has one of the most efficient offenses in the country and Nigel Williams-Goss is a bona fide star. But even without him, Gonzaga is balanced enough to compete at an extremely high level.
And Gonzaga has more than five high quality wins to bolster its elite resume! How is that not enough? Villanova might play in a better conference, but their slate of high quality wins is no more impressive than Gonzaga's.
Past History.
Mark Few's team has never reached the Final Four, adding to the idea that Gonzaga can't be a legitimate basketball powerhouse.
Wichita State didn't help matters when they upset number one seed Gonzaga in the second round of March Madness as a 9 seed. But Gonzaga still plays at a high level in the tournament, no matter what seed they get. Last year, the Bulldogs knocked off Seton Hall and then destroyed three seeded Utah before finally falling to Final Four bound Syracuse.
This year, Gonzaga will get a better seed and a better chance to get to the Final Four. They deserve the one seed and the committee would be wrong to deprive Few's team of that honor.
