Actress Zoe Saldana announced the birth of her third child on February 18, a son she and her husband, Marco Perego, have named Zen. Interestingly, Zen appears to have been either adopted or carried to term by a surrogate mother, as Saldana did not show signs of pregnancy before his birth. Ms. Saldana has not said which is the case, one way or the other. She is already the mother of twin boys named Cy and Bowie, who were born in 2014. She wrote a brief post on Instagram Saturday announcing Zen’s birth, including a photograph of all three of her children.
Why might Saldana have chosen to adopt or to hire a surrogate mother? She said in a September 2015 article in Us Weekly that, “You have to remind yourself that everything takes time. I feel bad for those women who are desperate and want to bounce back three months after having a baby.” Saldana took time off to fully recover after the birth of her twins and possibly did not want to have to take additional time off now. Or, perhaps she and Perego simply wanted to adopt.
Fans will not be able to see clear images of Zen’s face or of her twins’ faces. Saldana believes in protecting the privacy of her children in social media. She feels it would be wrong to put her children’s faces out on the internet before they are old enough to decide whether they are comfortable with or want that kind of exposure.
So fans will see rear-view, overhead, or profile shots of Saldana’s children, but nothing directly facing them with an unobstructed view.
