Hurricane Harvey is approaching the Texas Gulf Coast. Millions of people in the Corpus Christi area are fleeing their homes and millions more are stocking up supplies and are preparing for a long siege of wind and rain. Most Americans, including the president of the United States, are offering help and sympathy. Some, however, are taking the opportunity to take cheap shots.
Celebrity astrophysicist commends Texans on their lack of climate ‘denial’
Neil Degrasse Tyson, celebrity astrophysicist and media personality, took to Twitter and offered the following gem.
“Hmm. Don’t see much denial of @NOAA climate scientists who have predicted Hurricane Harvey’s devastating path into Texas.”
Tyson betrays an absolute ignorance of the art and science of hurricane tracking. Predicting the path and intensity of a hurricane is not an exact science. Days ago, Harvey was a minor tropical storm that had just made its presence known in the Yucatan. Even after meteorologists had determined that the storm was going to be a threat to Texas, its exact path and intensity when making landfall were not known until hours before the event.
On the other hand, those who believe in human caused global warming depend on computer models, somewhat dodgy data, and a lot of blusters to predict global temperatures and sea levels decades in the future.
Very often those models have proven to be wrong, such as the prediction that the Arctic ice cap would be gone a year or so ago.
Montel Williams weighs in with a shot at Trump supporters
Montel Williams, the long-time tabloid television talk show host, used the occasion to attack Trump supporters in Texas by tweeting, “Dear Trump supporters in Texas: Hurricane Harvey is not fake news, it’s real and it’s dangerous.
Good time to ignore fake President Trump.” Williams seems to be a Trump hater, at least if some of his other tweets are any indication. It should be noted that the president has offered the full support of the federal government to the people on the Texas gulf coast, suggesting that he is showing more compassion than either a tabloid TV talker or the man best known for disrespecting Pluto.
Why the hatred of Texas?
Texas has occupied a special place in the hearts of haters on the left since before living memory. The Lone Star State is deep red, with an independent, pro business streak. Texas is a center of the oil and gas industry, which climate change hysterics blame for global warming, but ironically is also a leader in renewable energy thanks to its dominance in wind power.
