Everyone loves movies. People love movies that entertain them and tell good stories. Audiences love to be invested in the story and for it to move them. Film is all based on the idea to tell a story that the audience can interpret as their own.
All a film is essentially supposed to do is tell a good story on a big screen. Some films don’t do that but the films recommended in this article are definitely worth a watch. They don’t tell happy stories but they are still great films.
‘Arrival’
“arrival” is a 2016 American science fiction film directed by Denis Villeneuve starring Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner, and Forest Whitaker.
The film is about Linguistics Professor Louise Banks (Amy Adams), with the help of her colleague Ian Donnelly (Jeremy Renner), trying to figure out why 12 space stations have landed in 12 different locations around the world.
Banks tries to comprehend the language that the extraterrestrial visitors are speaking to understand why they are here and what they want. If she is unable too then it might mean the end of all mankind. This film is one of the best reviewed of 2016 and the way it tells the story is both unique and interesting.
The film will have audiences watching it over and over again to really understand the story and the way it’s told. This film was so good that it received seven Oscar nominations including Best Director and Best Screenplay.
It’s definitely a must watch for everyone.
‘Beasts of No Nation’
“Beasts of No Nation” is a 2015 American war drama film written and directed by Cary Joji Fukunaga. The film stars Idris Elba and Abraham Attah. The film is about the civil war taking place in the western part of Africa and how a warlord (Idris Elba) trains a young boy (Abraham Attah) to join his guerrilla soldiers.
This movie was released on Netflix and it is one the best-reviewed movies of that year. It is a very powerful film that is very intense and the imagery may not be for everyone. It is a very hard film to watch but “Beasts of No Nation” definitely is a must watch.
‘Nightcrawler’
“Nightcrawler” is a 2014 American thriller film written and directed by Dan Gilroy starring Jake Gyllenhaal.
This independent film is based on unethical journalism and the demand for it. Gyllenhaal stars as Lou Bloom who goes around at night recording violent events in order to sell the footage to television companies.
This film is very well crafted and it depicts the unusual way of collecting news footage.”Nightcrawler” has some very dark themes and could even make a person question how they get their news. It’s a very fine film with a great performance from Jake Gyllenhaal and it should be recommended to anyone.
