Deew beauty and Wellness is a beauty company based in Vancouver, Canada, that takes a unique approach to beauty creams: they infuse then with Cannabis Sativa. The “Highly Nourishing Cremes” line currently has two scents “Chill” and “Uplift.”

The creams are made with Cannabis Sativa (hemp plant) which is entirely organic properties including seed oil, murumuru butter, and argan oil. Hence, each jar is all vegan and entirely natural making it healthy for skin. These cremes essentially take a holistic approach to one’s well-being since they are full of vitamins, minerals and nourishing essential fatty acids.

They focus on energizing and protecting skin from the effects of aging while also providing a sense of calm. Each jar sells for $38 CAD at our website “You Dee You (dot) com.”

Kelly Turner is the creator of the brand. A serial entrepreneur, she previously founded a large-scale shop called “Fall for Local” and is proud to be an Executive Director for a non-profit organization called Vancouver Entrepreneurs Forum (VEF). Kelly recently discussed her creations and more via an exclusive interview.

Anti-aging, ingredients, and hemp

Meagan Meehan (MM): When and how did you first learn about the anti-aging benefits of hemp?

Kelly Turners (KT): Like many women, I have always been on the quest to find better skin products that keep my skin feeling supple.

Frankly I was never into "weed" however as Canada got closer to legalization, I started experimenting with cannabis topicals and realized the beneficial properties of cannabis.

MM: What made you decide to create Deew Beauty and how did you think of the name?

KT: The "weed' counter-culture never appealed to me and yet as I started to benefit from the wellness properties of cannabis, I realized there were no products geared towards the modern-day woman.

As for the name, it's WEED spelled backwards!

MM: Hemp and Cannabis are not legal everywhere, so how did you ensure that your cremes would be legally sold everywhere?

KT: Times are a changing, however, the legal landscape is still very complicated. To ensure compliance across North America, we formulated our first few product lines with non-psychoactive hemp extracts that contain zero THC.

We are continuing to innovate with CBD and THC based formulas and will be launching those products in alignment with the changing legal landscape.

MM: How long did it take to come up with the blend of ingredients?

KT: Our first two products were developed over the course of a year and a half. We worked with two chemists to find the right balance of ingredients that would make your skin feeling youthful throughout the day. Our goal has always been to develop products that improved wellness as we as aligned to the discerning modern women.

MM: Why did you settle on the two scents you currently have and how many are on the way?

KT: I've been a big fan of aromatherapy and designed the two scents to align to the lifestyle of the busy on the go modern women.

Uplift Crème is uplifting and energizing, designed for daytime use, while the "Chill Crème" was designed to elevate your night time ritual giving a sense of relaxing. Uplift and Chill are just the beginning, with several other products being rolled out in 2019 to provide our clients with a full spectrum selection of products including face scrubs, serums and other elevating products.

Scents, cremes, and the future

MM: Why did you settle on the two scents you currently have and how many are on the way?

KT: Our first two products were developed over the course of a year and a half. We worked with two chemists to find the right balance of ingredients that would make your skin feeling youthful throughout the day.

Our goal has always been to develop products that improved wellness as we as aligned to the discerning modern women.

MM: What do you think are the best benefits these cremes have and what kind of feedback have you gotten about them?

KT: From a feedback perspective, let's just say we are struggling to keep up with the demand. We first launched our product at a shop local event in Vancouver and have established distribution to several retailers across the country. Our clients have described our scents as MAGICAL and better than the commercial skincare products.

MM: What are your biggest hopes for the future of Deew Beauty and how do you envision it evolving over the coming years?

KT: Plant Power!

There has been and still is stigma around cannabis — and we want to change that by developing products that align to the lifestyle of the modern women. We are continuing to focus on the physical as well as mental wellness benefits of cannabis and are developing products for women who are new to cannabis. We are excited to see the future!
